12 Days in Europe - Milano

It was time to say goodbye to Phi and catch the morning train from Torino to Milano. Instead of going all the way to Porta Nuova, I decided to walk and catch the train at Porta Susa and almost made it there before it started to rain. Again. The ride to Milano was in first class and it was actually pretty nice, definitely worth a few more dollars I paid for it.

One day pass is three euros.

12 Days in Europe - Torino (day three)

Today the rain continued, add the fact that all museums are closed in Italy on Mondays, and that did not leave me with much to do. First, I got an umbrella and a daily transportation pass (bileto gilatero?) to prepare myself for the adventures to follow. I checked out the street market at Porta Palazzo, hoppend on the bus to Piazza Palazzo di Citta and then on a tram to get to the other side of the river. There I walked up to Monte dei Cappuccini to church overlooking the city. Another good vantage point is a basilica in Superga, but I could barely see it because of low clouds so there was no point for me to try to get there.

Instead, I jumped back on the train and then on a bus to head over to Venaria Reale - the country residence of the city rulers that has a castle and lots of parks and gardens. Stadio delle Alpi was on the way so I hopped out to take a quick picture. Unfortunately, the old stadium was torn down and the new one is currently being built so there was not much to see there. Once I got to Veneria, I walked around for a bit. Everything was closed for the day and it was still raining. Even thought it is located next to the Alps, I have not seen the mountains at all because of the weather. That kind of sucked and soon I was on the way back.

Overall, I still enjoyed Torino a lot.

12 Days in Europe - Torino (day two)

After our adventures lasting well into the early morning, we slept in quite late. That, plus the never ending rain pretty much killed the day so I did the loundry at Phi’s and then walked over to the visitor info center by the Piazzo Castelo near Palazzo Reale di Torino. After getting some info to make my plans for the next day, I walked down via Pietro Micca and via Cernaia to Porta Susa train station and then up Corso San Martino and Corso Principe Eugenio back to Phi’s place under the pissing rain.

12 Days in Europe - Torino (day one)

I said farwell to Marseille early in the morning and hopped on a train to Niece. I only had time to walk out of the train station to take the picture and then it was time to go back and catch the train to Genoa. I had a couple hours to kill there so I walked down to the port, had some lunch, and had my first taste of italain gelato. Yum!
Later I hopped on the train to Torino for the last leg of my journey that day. As a Juve fan, I have been wanting to come to Torino for a long time now. It is also the home of Fiat as well as Nutella (that I did not know). There I met up with Philipe, a couchsurfer from Brazi that I would be staying with while I was in town.

We walked from the station to his place and I immediately noticed the old style architecture, piazzas and palazzos everywhere. We dropped off the bags and went on a walking tour of the city. There was some sort of celebration thatt day so the streets were packed with people everywhere. We checked out Palazzo Reale di Torino and then walked over to the Po river before turning back at the Piazza Vittorio Veneto.

On the way back we stopped by for an apertivo at one of the cafes. The idea is that during apertivo you pay for drink and snack food is provided for free. I expected peanuts and pretzels kind of snaks, but instead it was a big selection of meats, breads, cheeses, salads, and veggies. All that for just a pint of beer for eight euros. Oh, and did I mention the huge jar of Nutella?

Afterwards we met up with Phi’s friends frorm Brazil and went to Club 21. Not a big clubbing fun myself, I actually enjoyed it a lot (a number of vodka Red Bulls might of had something to do with that). We got out of there way past 3am and missed the last bus home so I got a night walking tour of Torino while it was drizzling.
